Thermal Imaging Monoculars

Is it legal to use thermal imaging monoculars for hunting in Australia?

Yes, thermal imaging monoculars are legal to own and use for hunting in Australia. However certain states do not allow the usage of thermal or night vision equipment during your hunt in state forests such as New South Wales. This also includes the possession of thermal and night vision devices even if they are in your car, camp or trailer while you are in the forest for the purpose of hunting. However, animal watching outside of the purpose of hunting is legal. Please ensure to check in your local jurisdiction.

The import of thermal monocular devices is not restricted by the Australian Government. However, you must seek permission from the department of defense for the export of your thermal or night vision monocular.

What are thermal imaging monoculars?

Thermal imaging monoculars are hand held devices that enable hunters to "see" heat signatures during total darkness.

Thermal imaging monoculars work by capturing infrared waves emitted from any object through their Germanium (rare earth material) lens. The incoming infrared waves are focused on the thermal imaging sensor which in turn will output the waves as a video. The display in the eye piece of the monocular will display the video so a human has the ability to visualise thermal radiation of any object.

Thermal imaging monoculars work in total darkness and need no further illumination.

Here at Going Dark we offer several different thermal imaging scopes, anything from the Pulsar Axion 2 Range, Pulsar Helion 2 Pro Range, InfiRay Finder Range and the Night Tech Stealth Range.

Thermal Imaging Monoculars with Range Finder

It is very difficult to judge distances at night when using a thermal device as the image is enlarged. The solution is to use a thermal monocular with integrated laser range finder. They work in total darkness or during the day.

Some thermal monoculars such as the Pulsar Axion 2 LRF, Infiray Finder FL25R and Infiray Finder FH25R have a laser range finder integrated into the thermal imaging monocular.
